Getting Started

Do I qualify to obtain/hold a firearms license?

The Queensland Police Weapons Licensing Branch requires that all firearms license holders, or persons applying for a firearms license be "a fit and proper person" that is 11 years old or older.

Qld Police Weapons Licensing Branch describes this as follows:
You will not be considered a fit and proper person under the Weapons Act 1990 if you been convicted, discharged from custody on sentence, in the last 5 years of any of the following:

  • offences relating to the misuse of drugs
  • offences involving the use or threatened use of violence
  • offences involving the use, carriage, discharge or possession of a weapon.

Or if you have been named as a respondent in a domestic violence order (other than a temporary protection order).

When deciding to grant a weapons licence, we also consider the following for whether you are a fit and proper person in Queensland:

  • your mental and physical fitness
  • whether you have provided anything false or misleading on/with your application
  • criminal intelligence or other information about you
  • the public interest

When you apply for a weapons licence you must let us know if you have ever suffered any medical conditions, such as serious eye or vision impairment, conditions causing seizures, brain injuries or neurological conditions, alcohol or drug related problems/dependency, physical impairment and psychiatric, psychological or emotional problems or other serious health diagnosis. You also need to let us know if you have a medical condition that affects your driver licence. You may be required to provide further details and a medical report from your doctor, psychologist or psychiatrist.

Step 1

You will need to become a member of SSAA Qld and set Q14 as your club.
Once you have decided on your genuine reason/s (you can choose more than one) you can go online and register these SSAA activities by visiting membership link below.
Genuine Reasons include:

  • Sport of Shooting
  • Recreational Shooting on Rural Land
  • Occupational e.g. Primary Producer, Animal Control, Commercial Wildlife Harvester, etc
  • Military Re-enactment, Historical Demonstration

This will help your firearms application as a genuine reason, for target shooting, hunting and collecting.
We have noticed that some new members are not being allocated to Q14 by SSAA Qld. If this occurs, please contact our Secretary so he can have that rectified.

Step 2

You will require a USI number from the federal government USI Website in order to register for your firearms safety course.

Contact your preferred training provider to conduct the 11029NAT Course in Firearms and Weapons Safety.

We do not run these, but here are some suggestions on the Sunshine Coast:

Once you have successfully completed the course, you will be issued a Certificate of Completion, which is a prerequisite when completing your application for a firearm licence.
